The Subclass 417 Working Holiday Visa allows eligible young travellers to holiday, work digitally or casually, and study short-term in Australia for up to 12 months, with extensions available under specified conditions.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must be between 18 and 30 (some countries extend to 35). Must hold a passport from an eligible country (e.g., UK, Canada, Germany, Japan, etc.), meet health and character requirements, have sufficient funds, and apply from outside Australia.

Visa Duration & Extensions

initial duration:

12 months from first entry.

second visa:

Available after completing at least 88 days (approx. 3 months) of specified regional work during the first year.

third visa:

Available after further specified work (usually 6 months) during the second year.

UK arrangement:

From 1 July 2024, UK passport holders aged 18–35 may receive up to three WHV 417 visas without needing specified work.

Apply from outside Australia for your first WHV.

No dependents allowed during stay.

Cannot work more than 6 months with the same employer.

Only up to 4 months of study/training permitted.

Must hold at least AUD 5,000 and have a return or onward ticket.

Application Process

Create an ImmiAccount and complete your online application.

Upload required documents: passport details, birth certificate (or equivalent ID), proof of funds, and health/character evidence if requested.

Pay the visa application fee (approx. AUD 635).

Submit application from outside Australia.

Upon grant, you have 12 months to enter Australia and activate your visa.

FAQs

Can I extend my stay after the first 12 months?

Yes, by applying for a second and third WHV 417, provided you meet the specified regional work requirements—or if you’re a UK passport holder applying on or after 1 July 2024, no specified work is needed.

What counts as 'specified work'?

Designated types of employment in regional areas such as agriculture, construction, forestry, fishing, tourism, among others, lasting at least 88 calendar days.

How long is the processing time?

Most applications are processed within about 14 days, but it can take longer if documentation is incomplete.
